Structural Health Monitoring in Tunnels

  • Early warning system
  • Satellite-based InSAR technology

The control of deformations produced by subway works is extremely important both during and after the construction phase.

Detektia generates structural health indices for all buildings and structures located in a wide area on both sides of the tunnel route. The monitoring of these indices during the execution of the work allows detecting which buildings, at what time and to what extent they have been affected.

Early warning solution for tunnels

Detektia generates structural health indices for all buildings and structures located in a wide area surrounding the tunnel trace. Near real-time monitoring of these indices during the execution of the work and posterior maintenance allows early detection of affected structures and damage extent.

Do you think you can have a more complete view of the deformation processes and affections that occur in subway works?

Knowing the historical behavior (8-10 years) of the area of interest is essential for detecting conditions during the work and setting up a good warning system. I am convinced that in a few years InSAR technology will be present in all the major subway works on the planet.

    More information

+-Why is instrumentation and auscultation important in urban tunnel construction?

Instrumentation and monitoring in urban subway works are crucial to ensure safety, protect existing infrastructure, control settlements, comply with regulations, optimize design and construction, document construction performance, manage risks and gain community trust.

The construction of tunnels in urban environments involves risks such as ground deformations, which can damage nearby buildings and other infrastructure, or water seepage, which can compromise the stability of the tunnel and adjacent structures.

+-What solutions do we offer for deformation control in subway works?

Satellite InSAR technology allows monitoring deformation processes in all buildings and infrastructures in a large area around the construction site. The generation of metrics and alerts from InSAR information helps to automatically and objectively detect site conditions.

The availability of hundreds of archival satellite images from the last decade allows reconstructing the historical geotechnical behavior of the area of interest.Knowing the historical behavior of the area is key to detect hot spots in advance and configure warning systems during the execution of the work.

+-What is our system for monitoring subway works?

Detektia has developed a system of metrics to evaluate the structural health of buildings and infrastructures. We generate metrics of state (accumulated deformation), rate (strain rate), change (acceleration in deformation) and homogeneity (differential deformation). The continuous monitoring of these metrics in each of the buildings and infrastructures allows us to automatically detect and quantify site conditions.

These deformation metrics are generated thanks to the Artificial Intelligence layer developed by Detektia.

+-Our proposal for the control of conditions caused by major tunneling projects

Thanks to the enormous volume of satellite radar data available in the last decade, we are able to describe the historical behavior of hundreds or thousands of buildings that could potentially be affected by a large subway construction project.

This historical information will be key to know if the damages in a building are caused by the work itself or by processes prior to the beginning of the same.
